Preparing for Disasters: Quick Tips

  • Find out what disaster risks exist in your area. Contact your local Emergency Management Office, Health Department or American Red Cross for more information regarding potential disasters risks and community resources available to your family during a disaster. Know your home's vulnerability to storm surge, flooding and wind.
  • Prepare a plan for your family in case a disaster occurs. Be sure to consider pets and family members who are elderly or who have special needs when creating your plan. For hurricanes and tornadoes, locate a safe room (usually an interior room) that your family can stay in to be safe from flooding and strong winds.
  • Have an emergency kit ready in your home. Keep the kit stocked with items such as bottled water, flashlights, baby items (diapers, formula), blankets, batteries, first aid kit, weather radio, copies of important documents, medications and non-perishable food items.
  • Post emergency telephone numbers by your phones and make sure your children know how and when to call 911.
  • Plan several escape routes from your home and decide on where your family members will meet in case you get separated.
  • Stay informed. Take all warnings and evacuation orders seriously. If you are asked to evacuate, do so immediately.
  • Be ready and be safe!
